A strong earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, rocked central Croatia on Tuesday. At least five people have been killed.

There have been reports of widespread damage in the central Croatian city of Petrinja, south of Zagreb.

According to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, a 12-year-old girl from Petrinja was killed. The mayor of Glina, southwest of Petrinja, confirmed at least four other fatalities in the town.

Downed phone lines across the country have lead to confusion, making the true extent of injuries and damage in the country unclear.

The quake was felt throughout Croatia and surrounding countries, including Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and even Austria.

This is a developing story.
