European Parliament Halts Payments of EU Funds to Ankara

The Plenary of the European Parliament recently adopted an amendment brought forward by a Greek MEP to halt all European funding to the Turkish authorities.

The amendment was proposed by Nikos Androulakis, an MEP for the Socialist and Democrats group of the EU Parliament and was voted in by the majority of the European parliamentarians.

The amendment provisions that EU funds will only be able to be given to Turkish NGOs that promote human rights, and not the official Turkish authorities.

It is noted that in the five-year period between 2014 and 2018 Turkey received a total of approximately €3.6 billion, a sum that dropped dramatically in 2019 and 2020 when Ankara received only €160 million.
