Italy Reports Record Number of Coronavirus Deaths; Harrowing Video Emerges From Hospital

Just as Italy reported a record 627 new deaths from the novel coronavirus on Friday evening, shocking footage from a hospital in Bergamo — the Italian city worst hit by the novel coronavirus — shows doctors and nurses desperately fighting to control the outbreak.

The video, broadcast by Sky News from the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital, shows an emergency-arrivals ward which has been transformed into an intensive-care unit because the regular ICU is already full.

The country’s overall death toll passed 4,000 as the pandemic gathered pace despite stringent government efforts to halt its spread, including a total nationwide lockdown.

The total number of deaths in Italy is now 4,032, with the number of those diagnosed with the virus reaching 47,021. Italy’s previous one-day record death toll was 475, which it experienced on Wednesday.

The nation of 60 million now accounts for 36.6 percent of the world’s coronavirus deaths. Italy has seen more than 1,500 fatalities from COVID-19 in the past three days alone.

Its current daily fatality rate is higher than that which was officially reported by China at the peak of its outbreak around Wuhan’s Hubei province.
