New 5.9-Magnitude Earthquake in Turkey Leaves 9 Dead, Dozens Trapped

At least eight people were killed and five others injured in eastern Turkey, when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the border region with Iran on Sunday, Ankara’s Anadolu agency reports.

Several buildings were damaged and many people are trapped under debris, Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said in a news conference.

The Turkish official added that search and rescue teams were dispatched to the quake-hit region.

A powerful earthquake hit eastern Turkey earlier in the year leaving 41 people dead and 1,600 injured.
