The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday on his party’s performance in the Israeli parliamentary elections held on Tuesday.

Anastasiades expressed his commitment to continue working with the Israeli prime minister.

In a message posted on twitter, President Anastasiades wrote: ”Dear Benjamin Netanyahu – congratulations for the victory of the Likud Party. As the election result paves the way for your fifth term as Israeli Prime Minister, I would like to express my strong commitment to continue working with you for the benefit of our countries & regional peace & stability.”

Netanyahu and his right-wing Likud party received 29.2 percent of the vote on Tuesday, with 97 percent of the total votes having been counted so far.

The new, Centrist ”Blue and White” party, formed in 2019, secured the exact same percentage of votes.

However, the Likud party is set to continue governing Israel, since a coalition with smaller religious and right-wing parties secures Netanyahu approximately 65 out of 120 parliamentarians in the Israeli Knesset, the country’s parliament.

If Netanyahu forms a new government, as he is expected to do, he will become Israel’s longest serving prime minister in the history of the nation.
