Award-winning director Dimos Abdeliodis presented his film “The Four Seasons of The Law” (“I Earini Synaxis Ton Agrofylakon”) last Thursday at the at the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf’s own movie theater “Black Box”, Germany.

The director followed that up with the German debut of a theatrical production of “Helena” on Monday, March 11.

The film “The Four Seasons of the Law” won the Caligari Film Award at the Berlinale in 2000, and was voted one of the ten best Greek films of all time. The story takes place in the director’s homeland, on the island of Chios, around the year 1960.

Following the sudden and mysterious death of the local field guard, the village of Tholopotamos assembles their council to replace him. The town has a bad reputation, and we watch a procession of four men volunteer for the job, and fail, as the seasons come and go.

The theatrical presentation of Yiannis Ritsos’ play titled “Helena”, adapted by Abdeliodis with German subtitles translated by Elena Pallantza, premiered for the first time on Monday outside Greece.

The director studied philosophy in Athens and was an actor before beginning his career as a director. Abdeliodis, along with actress Veronika Argentzi, were enthusiastically welcomed by the audience.

The Greek director is responsible for developing a unique technique which radically changed the way Ancient Greek words are pronounced today. Argentzi shared her experience with this as she recited texts, allowing the audience to hear the melody and poetry of ancient words.

Abdeliodis, a veteran of over 26 theatrical productions and films, says that his target audience is “mankind in general.” Asked about his newest project, the “Satyrical Drama of Athens,” which combines elements of ancient drama and comedy, the director noted that financial support is needed to start filming.

The Dusseldorf film showing was organized by Eleni Giannakoudi, from the Greek Film Fest in Düsseldorf, with Maria Papakonstantinou, the Greek General Consul in Düsseldorf.   Christos Giaxidis from GREKA (Greek Academics of Northern Westphalia) and Lito Dakou from the Molivos International Music Festival also helped arrange the event.
