U.S. Support to the Ecumenical Patriarchate After Orthodox Schism

The United States expressed its support to the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to recognize the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as independent.

A spokesman for the Department of State said on Tuesday that the U.S. administration is supporting the assertion of the right of religious freedom in Ukraine as well as the territorial integrity of the country.

He also praised Bartholomew, the Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch, saying he is the “voice of religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue.”

Earlier in the week, the Russian Orthodox Church decided to cut all ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate over its decision, a move that constitutes the largest schism in Orthodox Christianity for over a century.
