Around 100 people are feared dead after a boat carrying 100 migrants overturned at sea near the coast of Libya on Friday.

Libya’s coastguard told the Associated Press they had rescued 14 migrants but could not confirm the death toll or the nationalities of those thought to have lost their lives.

The boat capsized near Tripoli. Libya has been one of the main routes for people from Africa trying to make it to Europe. Thousands have drowned in their attempts to reach the EU.

Greece is still home to nearly 60,000 registered migrants who have most crossed the Aegean Sea from Turkey.

Friday’s incident has taken place as EU states have agreed a new strategy on dealing with the migrant crisis, with states likes Italy and Greece dealing with the vast majority of migrant cases.
