Turkish Cartoonist, 69, Jailed for Erdogan ‘Insult’

Nuri Kurtcebe (R)

A Turkish court has jailed an elderly cartoonist for apparently insulting the country’s ruler, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with his drawings.

Nuri Kurtcebe, whose work appears in the Kemalist newspaper Aydinlik, was sentenced to 14 months in prison, according to his lawyer.

Kurtcebe was arrested on Monday at a checkpoint in the northwestern province of Yalova over the images which date back to 2015.

His lawyer, Ahmet Erdem Akyuz, was quoted by Hurriyet as saying his client’s arrest followed the failure of an appeal in a higher court.

Numerous artists, athletes, writers, comedians and performers have fallen foul of laws which forbid ‘insulting’ Turkey’s rulers.
