Turkish Forces Arrest PKK Suspects Near Greek Border

The Pazarkule border crossing with Greece

Two people allegedly tied to the Kurdish PKK group have been detained near Turkey’s border with Greece, Ankara’s military claimed on Monday.

State-run Anadolu Agency said a third person was also arrested in the incident near the Pazarkule border crossing with Greece in Turkey’s Edirne province.

The arrests took place in a restricted military zone, the report said and claimed one of the suspects was wanted for activities in northern Iraq; a second was purportedly jailed for a year in Turkey after trying to enter Bulgaria illegally in 2016.

Also in the same area on Monday five children and 13 adults — migrants and asylum seekers — had to be pulled from the Evros river on the Greek side of the border.

Their vehicle crashed into the river during a chase with Greek police

This year has seen a number of high-profile incidents along the Turkish-Greek border, not least the arrest of two junior Greek army officers on March 1.

The pair entered Turkey mistakenly in bad weather conditions; their prolonged detention in Edirne has caused more friction with Ankara amid emotional appeals from the two men’s families for their release.

On the other side of the frontier, two German reporters were recently detained by Greek forces after wandering into a restricted area. They had been researching a documentary about refugees who use the area as a means of crossing into the EU illegally.
