Juncker: No EU for Balkan States Stuck in Border Spats

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said EU membership for more Balkan countries will be impossible until existing border disputes are resolved.

Speaking in Strasbourg, Juncker told European lawmakers there “can be no further accession” until spats and divisions over borders are fixed.

Among them is the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) whose path to EU and NATO membership remains blocked due to its insistence on using ‘Macedonia’ — a position rejected by successive Greek administrations.

Juncker’s Tuesday statement comes days after UN mediator on the FYROM name dispute, Matthew Nimetz, warned time was running out to find a lasting solution to the issues which has persisted since 1991.
