Golden Dawn Girls: The Film Stealing the Limelight at International Festival (video)

A documentary about the rapid rise of neo-Nazism in contemporary Greece has won acclaim by film critics at the International Documentary Film Festival, which is taking place in Amsterdam.

Norwegian doc-maker Havard Bustnes, offers a grimly compelling study of this disturbing portrait of the women behind Golden Dawn; the Greek political party that keeps Nazi ideology alive.

Film critic Guy Lodge says that the party’s leading women; most notably Michaloliakos’s 26-year-old daughter Ourania, granted the filmmaker surprisingly generous access in the naive belief that a flattering portrait of Golden Dawn will emerge from the collaboration.

The film opens with a shrewd bit of intellectual cornering, as Bustnes asks Ourania to explain the difference between nationalism and Nazism. Piqued, she opts out: “That requires me to explain myself… I don’t care about that.”

The documentary was screened on Sunday at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, which offers an alternative to mass entertainment and uniformity, confirming that there is an increasing need in audiences for high-quality films that delve deep and urge us to reflect.
