Greece Among Worst Countries for Tourist Scams

pickpocketsThe summer holidays offer people a chance to relax, leave work behind and let go of daily problems. However, during summer holiday trips, many tourists fall victims of deception and various scams.

British website money.co.uk undertook the task of investigating this phenomenon. The website spoke with 2,000 Britons who had travelled across Europe in the last 12 months, asking if they had fallen victims to any scams during their holidays.

The term “scam” included incidents like pickpocketing, paying a hidden tourist tax on arrival at a hotel, extra costs for car rentals, pushy street vendors, overcharging taxi drivers and street crime, including burglary.

Even though the resulting list only refers to incidents that occurred to British tourists, it provides a good idea of where the risks lie when visiting the continent.

Greece was in sixth place with scam incidents occurring to 7.5% of the 2.000 Britons that participated in the survey.

The full list, published on Thrillist, included the following countries:

10. Cyprus (4.4%)
9. Armenia (4.4%)
8. Great Britain (5.4%)
7. Belgium (7%)
6. Greece (7.5%)
5. Austria (8.1%)
4. Turkey (8.4%)
3. Italy (10.2%)
2. France (14.8%)
1. Spain (21.5%)
