A 40% decrease was recorded in the sale of Russian vacation packages to Greece for this summer, according to a recent interfax.ru article.
Furthermore, high decrease was also recorded in vacation trips to Italy and France. In particular, European countries have recorded an overall 20%-30% decrease in tourist bookings for this summer.
At the same time, other destinations, namely Turkey and Egypt, show significant increase, meaning that the tourists’ preference has shifted toward Greece’s neighboring countries. An increase was also recorded in vacation packages to Spain and Mallorca.
The low demand for trips abroad has forced airlines to discontinue routes or limit their connecting flights to various destinations. Meanwhile, Russians are turning to domestic tourism, with the most popular destination being Simferopol. The bookings increase stood at 68% compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, the sale of expensive vacation packages remains unaffected by the crisis, since wealthy Russians still opt for luxury destinations and resorts. In this category, sales are doing better than last year, noted Russian Union of Tourism Industry press secretary Irina Tyurina.
The most popular destinations among wealthy Russians are Japan and the Indian Ocean islands -Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives- as well as the United Arab Emirates.
