Travel agency Thomas Cook won £3.5 million in compensation for loss of profits and other expenses after the tragic deaths of two British children in Corfu in 2006.
Bobby and Christi Shepherd died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty hot water boiler housed near the bungalow they were staying for holidays with their father and stepmother at five-star Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel.
The grieving parents, Neil Shepherd and Sharon Wood, received £350,000 each from Louis Hotels, owner of the bungalow, around one tenth of the sum Thomas Cook received, after a harsh seven-year legal battle.
Wood told the media last night: ‘It seems our children’s lives are worth only a fraction of Thomas Cook’s reputation.”
Thomas Cook asked to receive compensation for the cost of sending special “media advisers” to Greece, loss of profits due to booking cancellations, refunds or compensation over the incident, and loss of revenue because “the employees had to spend a considerable proportion of their time dealing with the tragedy.”
