Greek Village Residents from Donetsk Sent to Greece for Medical Care

russiaFifty one residents of a Greek village in the Russian-speaking region of Donetsk will be transferred to Greece for medical rehabilitation with expenses covered by Russian Greek Diaspora Organizations.

“The Greek Diaspora in Russia will undertake the expenses related to the accommodation and nourishment of people whose documents are being prepared for their transfer to Greece,” stated Ivan Mihailov.

Mihailov is a head official of a district that is part of the Donetsk region, where Russian-speaking rebels have taken over. “Greek villages are right at the disengagement line and their restoration is extremely difficult.”

“We hope that the Minsk agreement implementation will change the situation so that we can start building a peaceful life in our region, along with the Greek communities,” he added.

According to the local official, five Greek villages in the region have been affected by the intensive artillery fire of the Ukrainian military.”

“People are tired, morally and physically. They need a break,” he said, describing a village that has been gravely affected by the fighting during the months before the ceasefire.

The head of the Federation of Greek Communities of Russia is the well-known Greek Diaspora businessman and major shareholder of Greek football club PAOK, Ivan Savvidis.
