Bonhams Organizing Greek Art Sale on April 28

bongreek-2Privately owned British auction house Bonhams is organizing a Greek Art sale in London on April 28, featuring the works of various 19th century Greek artists. Nicholaos Gysis’ (1842-1901) “Little girl,” a painting estimated at 50,000-70,000 pounds, will be leading the auction.

Gysis was considered one of Greece’s most important 19th century painters and major representative of the so-called Munich School, the 19th century Greek art movement.

“Little girl” was painted in 1882 and it is a portrait of the artist’s daughter, Penelope. It is painted with great love and affection as well as consummate skill, and it is considered one of Gysis’ best works. Bonhams Greek Art sale will also include his portrait “Young girl with headscarf” (25,000-30,000 pounds).

Furthermore, the April 28 auction will feature works by different Greek artists, such as Michalis Economou’s (1888-1933) “Old Mill in Hydra,” estimated at 40,000-60,000 pounds, “Shore Scene” (20,000-30,000 pounds) by Vassilios Hatzis (1870-1915) and “Junction in choppy seas” (20,000-30,000 pounds) by Jean Altamoura.

The Greek Art sale will also include works by famous 20th century Greek artists such as Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika and Yannis Moralis.

According to Art Daily, Bonhams Greek Art specialist Olympia Pappa stated: “All the main movements in Greek Art from the 19th century to the present day are represented in this sale with high quality works that showcase the breadth of subject, technique and style of the nation’s artistic heritage.”
