61% of Germans Say ‘Yes’ to Grexit

germans-grexitThe majority of Germans are open to the idea of Greece’s exit from the Eurozone, if the country fails to comply with the austerity measures that international lenders have imposed, revealed a survey conducted by German broadcaster agency ARD.

A striking 61% of Germans believe that a Grexit would be good for Europe if Greece fails to reduce its public expenditure as agreed with the Troika (IMF/ECB/EU), in return for the financial aid program. Furthermore, the survey showed that Germans are also opposed to a concession in the light of the upcoming crucial Greek elections.

“A Greek exit from the euro would be much less dramatic for the rest of Europe than a few years ago,” noted 53% of the respondents.

Moreover, 68% is opposed to writing off part of the Greek debt while only 28% said that this is a viable option to support the country’s economic recovery. However, 80% of respondents said they want the German government to urge Greece to comply with the austerity measures. As for the European debt crisis, 61% believe that this could happen again in the future.

The survey was conducted on Monday and Tuesday (January 5 and 6) among 1,006 Germans aged 18 and above.
