A Greek in Paris Talks About ‘Charlie Hedbo’ Terrorist Attack

paris-attackParis residents were shocked today, January 7, after the terrorist attack on the Charlie Hedbo magazine offices. French authorities suspect that the gunmen who opened fire in the satirical magazine offices killing 12 people and injuring another 7 were, in fact, Islamists.

The attack took place at 11:30 am on Wednesday morning, after staff gathered for their weekly meeting. French President Francois Hollande visited the scene and stated that the crime was “a terrorist attack, without a doubt.” It was an “act of exceptional barbarism,” he said.

The City of Light is now in mourning and authorities are roaming the streets in order to locate the attackers who were armed with AK-47s and a rocket-launcher.

Greek website “Newsit” came in contact with the Greek embassy press office in Paris and verified that no Greeks have requested assistance in relation to the incident.

Athena Massoura, who works at the Orthodox Foundation secretariat, stated that “everyone is shocked. The attack was very serious and it has many implications on freedom of speech and democracy.”

“People in France are numb, everyone is watching the recent developments on television, the internet and the radio. We are sitting at the edge of ours seats, waiting to hear what happened,” she added.

According to the Greek national, the magazine had been targeted by Islamists because it had published several satirical cartoons during the previous weeks. Security measures in Paris have already increased, with police officers guarding every corner of the city.
