The wax statues of Alexander the Great and Philip II are among the exhibits of the new archaeological museum in Skopje that opened its doors to the public on Saturday.
The museum, which according to the FYROM Culture Ministry had a cost of 27 million euros, covers an area of 6,000 square meters and its collections include 6,000 different objects. It exhibits 15 wax figures, among them those of Alexander the Great, Philip II, Ioustinianos, Perseus and Czar Samuel.
The wax figures are in full scale and were manufactured in Russia. A copy of a marble sarcophagus in Sidon (known as the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great) is exhibited at the museum’s entrance. The original sarcophagus is kept in the archaeological museum of Istanbul.
“All these new archaeological exhibits are priceless for our country and represent a part of our cultural heritage that reflects the particular traditions, knowledge and values of our country’s previous generations” said FYROM Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at the museum’s inauguration ceremony, while he further announced that a museum for the “Macedonian refugees from the civil war with Greece” will also be opened next week.
