Greece Among Drunkest Countries

alcohol-disorders-map“Social drinkers” drink to celebrate a special occasion or relax after a difficult day. Many people do, however, deal with serious drinking problems owing to alcohol addiction. A new survey shows where those people tend to live.

A map created by the website Wasted Worldwide sheds light on drinking habits around the globe. Wasted Worldwide created a series of colored images that reveal which countries drink the most, which gender drinks the most, what types of alcohol are most popular, and which countries have the most alcohol-related deaths. To create these maps, Wasted Worldwide used data from the 2014 Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health.

Greece is among the drunkest countries in Europe. Greek alcohol consumption reached 14 liters a year per capita. Belarus drinks the most alcohol in the world, with an average per capita consumption of 17.5 liters. Russia ranks second with an average consumption of 15.1 liters.

Men in Greece drink an average of 20 liters per year. The highest consumption in men was recorded in Belarus, with 27.5 liters per capita. Greek women drink about 8 liters per year – the second-most in the world.

Greeks prefer beer and wine over hard liquors. Approximately 7% of the Greek population deals with health problems related to alcohol, though deaths related to alcohol are relatively few compared with Russia and the countries of the former USSR.

Areas where alcohol is prohibited for religious reasons – northern Africa, the Middle East– drink the least.
