Greek Tourism Comeback According to German Travel Association

german tourists in GreeceThe time when newspapers used to report that Greeks were painting swastikas on images of Chancellor Angela Merkel, making German tourists feel unwelcome in Greece, are in the past, stressed German Travel Association (DRV) president Norbert Fiebig to “Ruhr Nachrichten” newspaper.

Fiebig said that Greek tourist destinations are making a comeback for Germans, even though many Germans had turned their backs on Greece a few years ago, choosing other destinations due to the effects of the economic crisis.

“However, this trend was short-lived,” added Fiebig, while recalling that even in the difficult years of the crisis, more than two million Germans remained faithful to Greece and chose to spend their holidays in Greek islands.

He stated: “Tour operators have reported that during this summer, the increase in bookings to Greek destinations grew to a double digit percentage.” Furthermore, he noted that most Germans tourists prefer to travel to Crete, Rhodes and Corfu. This was confirmed by the large tour operator firms, which released data showing an increase of 20-40% in holiday booking to the Greek islands.

Fiebig also added that the number of German tourists visiting Greece exceeded 2.3 million in 2013. According to the German Press Agency, more than 20 million tourists will arrive in Greece in 2014, setting a new record.
