Outcry for Greek Statues Snapped in Tulle and Feathers

Greek statuesThe ancient Greek statues known as the Riace Bronzes were dressed in white tulle, feathers and leopard print underwear by photographer Gerald Bruneau, causing the outrage of people who love ancient Greece and history.

“I love to be provocative,” said the photographer, adding that he is always looking for new adventures.

Riace Bronzes, which are classified among Italy’s most precious archaeological treasures, were discovered off the coast of Calabria in 1972 and finally went on display in southern Italy last year after a lengthy restoration process in the museum where they are housed now.

The Greek statues are remnants found off Magna Graecia. They were discovered by an Italian chemist who was snorkelling in shallow waters about 200 yards from Monasterace in 1972.

Simonetta Bonomi, Superintendent of Reggio Calabria’s National Archaeological Museum said that she never authorised the photo shooting.  However she admitted that she had granted the photographer permission to take one photo with the white veil draped on one of the statues during a visit in January.

“Without my knowledge, he shot other images that are terrible. When the guards realised what had happened they stopped him but evidently he had already taken several shots,” she reported.

The museum characterized the photos as “terrible” while a local politician has demanded a judicial inquiry.
