Patriarch Bartholomew Ending Visit to Germany in Dachau

VartholomaiosThe Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios will end his nine-day official visit to Germany on Monday with a visit to the Dachau concentration camp, where thousands of Jews lost their lives during World War II.

The spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Church met with German President, Joachim Gauck and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. His visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany. The Ecumenical Patriarch described the Church as a “pillar” for thousands of Greek migrants to Germany.

Dachau concentration camp  was the first of the camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km  northwest of Munich, southern Germany. There were 32,000 documented deaths at the camp while thousands are undocumented
