Protests Against Closure of Greek-German School in Berlin

schoolAccording to the German newspaper “Der Tagesspiegel” the bilingual Greek-German school, “Homer” in the borough of Pankow in eastern Berlin is about to be closed.

As reported on Wednesday April 2, parents of the students will gather outside the city hall to protest. Tomorrow the city council will meet in order to examine the request of the left party “Die Linke” which favors the operation of the school. If the school in Pankow is closed, students will have to attend Greek classes in the school “Athene” which is located 16 km away, in the western part of Berlin.

Last September the parents of the pupils were informed that the school was planned to be transformed into a regular German-speaking school in order to facilitate the growing education demand of the borough.

The students’ parents are reacting against the closure of Homer school as they want their children to have the opportunity to learn both languages. Moreover, there is a growing number of families that are migrating from Greece to Germany and want their children to receive a Greek education.
