Greeks of Sochi Ready to Host Olympic Games

sochi olympicsThe opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games 2014 inĀ  Sochi, Russia, is taking place February 7 at 6.30 p.m. The Greek mountainous village Krasnaya Polyana (Red Glade) will also host a part of the biggest sporting event in the planet.

The president of the Greek Community of Sochi, Konstantinos Sarakosis reported that he is very proud of this event that will unite Hellenism with the rest of the world.

A Greek professor in the Law School of Sochi who is also responsible for the voluntary sector of the Paralympic Games said “it’sĀ a great honor, especially for us, the Greeks of the city to welcome the President of Greece.” Sophia Zepos, owner of a Greek restaurant located near Krasnaya Polyanna stated that she is ready to welcome the foreign visitors who have already arrived in the region.

The village Krasnaya Polyana was founded in 1878 by two Greeks of Pontian origin. Although the village is inhabited by 22 ethnic groups it still maintains a strong Greek element. The residents of the village reach 5,000 of which 800 are Greeks. The Greek presence in the Black Sea and the region of Sochi dates back to the ancient era and is related to Prometheus, Hercules and other mythological heroes.
