On the occasion of Greece’s presidency of the EU Council, various NGO’s and trade unions, human rights and civil society organizations from across Europe, sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament asking him to scrutinize a report on Greece’s human rights record, which as indicated in article 7 of the TEU, is the main rule of law and democracy in the country-President of the EU.

A wide range of serious violations of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights is described in the letter. According to this letter, there have been many violations of human rights in Greece since 2010, when the country was subjected to the harsh economic measures of Troika.

About 75,000 Greeks from the federation of municipal workers (POE-OTA) along with 55,000 members of the trade union for professors of secondary education and 167,000 Belgians from the private sector union (CNE) have also signed the letter. Another signatory is the European Association for the Defense of Human Rights (AEDH), a range of 30 European organizations from 22 EU member states, as well as the Corporate Europe Observatory.

During the course of the week, several Greek Ministers will be presenting before various committees of the European Parliament in order for the procedure to start. Signatories put pressure on members of the European Parliament to take advantage of this occasion as they will have the chance to interrogate the Greek Ministers on the evidence of the violation of human rights in Greece, which is included in their letter.
