Ancient Greeks Day in Holbeach Primary School

ancient_Greeks_dayWilliam Stuckeley Primary School, Holbeach, revived ancient Greece for its pupils, adding a wow factor to their history lessons.

An ancient Greeks day was organized by the teachers to launch this term’s history topic. As the teacher of the school, Toni Handson explained: “We hold these Wow Days every time we launch a new topic for our children.”

The youngsters came in touch with elements of ancient Greek art, cookery and creative writing. The pupils also dressed up in various Greek costumes. In addition, the young students were asked to do some research about the architecture and the music of ancient Greeks. The ancient Greeks day also included a brief lesson about the Greek language and mythology, focusing mostly on gods and goddesses such as Zeus, Hercules and Apollo.

Miss Handson continued: “This term we’re looking at Ancient Greeks, and for the beginning of the topic, children and staff came to school dressed as Greek warriors or gods. We did a carousel of activities, including Greek architecture, dance, food and drink, history and the Greek alphabet. The children also learned how to write their name in Greek and did some research on Greek gods and goddesses so they could play a card game.”

The youngsters made a lot of creative things on Ancient Greeks, such as laurel wreaths, message cards from Zeus and posters showing Greek architecture and design.

Miss Handson stated: “The children were inspired to go on and continue their learning about ancient Greek history.” Ancient Greeks are to this day of global importance, laying the foundation of western society.
