Greeks Choose Norway for Work

norway-In the past, Greeks used to choose countries such as Germany, Belgium, Australia and the USA to find a job. These countries were like a land of hope and voluntary exile for Greeks who were seeking a lifetime opportunity in foreign lands. Now, history is being repeated as Greeks resort to moving abroad for a better future.

In contrast with the past, the only difference is that new workplaces and destinations have been added for Greeks. For instance, a recent publication of Norway Post said “Norway is expected to receive a large wave of immigrants from southern Europe.”

Norway Post noted that the economic crisis influenced the labor market in Southern Europe in a negative way over the last five years. Consequently, Norway has received a significant number of immigrants, which is expected to increase.

From November 2012 to November 2013, the number of Greeks in Norway in the labor market has increased by 49 percent. Spain follows with 39 percent, and Portugal with 32 percent.

According to Senior Advisor of Statistics of Norway Anders Ekelant, “This is a new phenomenon and we cannot estimate its own ramifications.”

Global social service organization Caritas has assumed integration of new members into Norway, while each month about 800 people come to the country.
