Bavarian Police Recruit Greeks

The Greek Orthodox Church of All Saints situated in Strasse, Munich was crowded with Greek Christians that were attending Sunday’s Divine Liturgy, when five police officers appeared at the door.

Three of them were wearing ordinary police uniforms, while the others wore uniforms of high-ranking officers of the “Polizei.” In fact, one of the high-ranking officers was from the federal police. Everyone who attended the service was curious as to what the police officers were doing in the church, except for the Priest, Apostole Malamousis, who already knew the purpose of their visit.

Once the Divine Liturgy was over, the priest, the crowd and the officers went to the chamber where the Greeks of Munich gather every Sunday to discuss their various issues.

The priest allowed the officers to explain the purpose of their visit to the crowd. The high-ranking officers explained that the Bavarian Police force is in need of men and that the authorities are in search of recruiting second generation Grreeks, or newly arrived Greeks, in the local police force. Greeks who choose to take this opportunity will receive the necessary training, and placed to cover empty posts in the Bavarian Police force. In addition, they would be able to attain German citizenship — but this is not obligatory for the potential police officers. The high-ranking officers said to a rather surprised audience, “We trust Greeks; this is why we choose them.” The other three police officers  — who are Greeks — went on to speak to the crowd, in order to reaffirm the statements of their superiors.  The names of the Greek officers are: Athanasia, Andreas and Charalambos.

Bavarians have truly shown deep respect toward Greek people and love them because they believe they are truthful. Greek immigrants hold many posts in the services of Munich, not only in the Police sector. There are also Greeks that hold important positions, working in the Bavarian industry.

The bond between the Greek community and the locals is unique. Even the deputy mayor of Munich is Greek.
