Eurostat released a research report concerning the cause of European deaths for the year 2010. Research was conducted in 33 countries and evidence suggested that heart attacks are the major cause of concern in the European Union — seeing as 418 deaths per 100,000 people in 2010 were recorded.
Per 100,000 inhabitants in the EU, 418 deaths resulted from heart attacks, 279 from neoplastic diseases, 81 from respiratory problems, 48 from gastrointestinal, 48 from exogenous factors and 25 from neurological issues were reported.
The biggest problem appears to be for men, as in most cases, the numbers of deaths are more than double in comparison to women’s numbers in all of these categories.
What about Greece? It is worth noting that the country has some of the lowest numbers in each category, for deaths of inhabitants over 65 years of age. What is more impressive are the suicide numbers, seeing there were 10 in 2010 (9 men and 1 woman). Equally impressive is the rate of skin cancer, given that its victims in Greece were 11 (6 men , 5 women).
The leading cause of death in elderly Greeks are as follows (deaths per 100,000 inhabitants):
Cancer: 1,336 men – 672 women
Lung cancer: 392 cases in men
117 breast cancer cases in women
Skin Cancer: 6 men – 5 women
Heart Attack: 321 men – 185 women
Accident: 71 men – 27 women
Suicide: 9 men – 1 woman
