1 of 3 Greeks Feel Informed of Scientific and Technological Advancements

eurobarometerOnly one out of three Greeks (32 percent) feels well informed about scientific and technological advancements, according to the latest “Eurobarometer’s” survey for 2013. All the 28 Member States of the European Union took part in the research. The percentage of the Greeks that are up-to-date with the latest scientific and technological advancements is below the equivalent European average (40 percent).

Scandinavians show the biggest interest in scientific and technological advancements (Denmark 65 percent and Sweden 61 percent) while the least concerned people are in the Balkans (Bulgaria and Romania with 25 percent).

More than half Europeans (53 percent) state that they are interested in scientific and technological matters. The percentage is increased by 8 percent compared to 2011’s research percentage. It is obvious that the Europeans’ interest in science and technology has increased, not only because these matters have become more familiar to them, but also because they realize how important are both science and technology in order for a country to develop and for people’s everyday life to become easier.

Almost two out of three Europeans (62 percent) appear to be concerned about the fact that “science changes our lives too radically.” Although, the majority (77 percent) believes that the scientific and technological advancement  influence the society in a positive way, as it makes our life easier, healthier, more comfortable and creates new opportunities for the future generations.

Television seems to be the most common source (65 percent) of information towards scientific and technological matters. Second comes the internet (35 percent) and third the newspapers (33 percent).

The Eurobarometer’s research was funded by the Science and Society programme of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), as European Commission’s main goal is to engage more citizens with science, research and innovation and promote responsible research and innovation.
