The deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc has expressed his hope to see Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia Museum turned into a mosque. With this statement he has expanded the agenda of social and religious changes which are planned by the government.
During his speech in Istanbul he stated that: “in the past it was possible to accept that former mosques will function as museums. However, there is a different Turkey now.” He also stated that “We are looking at this innocent Hagia Sophia and wishing that its happy days will come soon.”
Furthermore, he said that he is “very happy” because two other buildings named Ayasofya, which are situated in the cities of Iznik and Trabzon, converted into mosques again.
