Spiegel Compares Greece to Banana Republic

ERT evacuation
The German magazine Spiegel compared Greece to a Banana Republic in an article published on the magazine’s website. The article entitle “Like a Banana Republic” refers to the intervention and evacuation of the ERT building in Agia Paraskevi by the Special Police Force.

“Observers claim that the government wanted to send a decisive message to Greek people as well as to the country’s lenders. Troika came back to Greece to examine the disbursement of the next installment. The government wants to show it is ready to face the wrath of the unions and to impose the necessary changes. Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, along with other high-ranking politicians gave the green light for the police operation” notes the magazine.

Another article published in the German newspaper TAZ mentions: “The police ended the occupation of ERT in Athens. According to the government, the operation was conducted peacefully. Journalists beg to differ.”

Specifically: “The police came with more than 100 men and we were violently repelled from the courtyard with the use of tear gas. It’s a miracle no one got hurt” said Nikos Michalitsis, an old ERT associate to the newspaper TAZ.
