ECHR Rules that Greece Violated Human Rights

European-court-of-human-r-008European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Greece has violated the human rights of an immigrant from Afghanistan. Greece was sentenced for keeping a minor refugee from Afghanistan in a migrant holding center under unacceptable living conditions, along with adults.

Afghan refugee Ali Housein was arrested in 2011 for illegally entering Greece. He was seven years old at the time and unaccompanied by an adult.

Ali Housein adjudicated his appeal to ECHR, who ruled that Greece violated Ali’s right to liberty and security, and ordered the Greek State to pay him 12,000 euros in compensation.

Greek authorities, ignored the rights Ali had as an unaccompanied minor, and while they were waiting for his deportation back to Afghanistan, he was kept in a migrant holding center along with other adults. This is something that is against the European Convention of Human Rights.

Ali’s lawyer objected to the unacceptable living conditions in the migrant holding center where the boy stayed, and pleaded for the necessity of the child to be transferred in a holding center for unattended minors, but this was rejected by Greek Courts. In fact afterwards, Greek courts gave order for Ali to remain in the migrant holding center where he already was.
