Letta Meets Samaras, to Stand Firm on Issue at Eu Council

Italian premier Letta meets Greek premier SamarasThe EU must come up with answers that are equal to the questions raised by the fatal October 3 shipwreck off Lampedusa Island, Italian Premier Enrico Letta said Monday in Rome following his meeting with his Greek counterpart, Antonis Samaras.
In that wreck, 366 sub-Saharan refugees drowned when their boat caught fire and capsized less than a mile from the island.
”These answers must involve both the management of migration flows and security in the Mediterranean”, said Letta after what he called a ”very important” meeting with Samaras.
”We will stand firm on the immigration issue at the next European Council meeting. We will not accept superficial advice”, he announced. ”Those in positions of institutional responsibility must give answers above all. This is why we met, and this is why we took some initiatives”.
The Italian premier went on to outline his country’s position during its upcoming turn as EU president.
”With the European Council as a starting point, and during our two-semester presidency, we will boost FRONTEX, make EUROSUR becomes operational as scheduled, promote a Europe-wide debate on the right to asylum, and provide the Mare Nostrum mission with a strong capacity to act on the countries of origin”, Letta stated.
