Ancient Greek History is Revived at Henlow Academy

Ancient Greek History is Revived at Henlow AcademyHenlow Academy usually organizes Living History days for its pupils, in which children learn about different cultures and the great history of different civilizations, through a very realistic experience. On Wednesday, the 9th of October, for the 6th consecutive year, children had the opportunity to experience Ancient Greece first hand, by participating in activities and customs of the ancient Greeks, as well as being educated. The children read Ancient Greek tragedies, dug and excavated artefacts, made pots and dressed up like ancient Greeks in costumes specially designed for the occasion.

The Henlow Academy middle school for children aged 9 – 13  was established in 1976, and officially opened by Lord Runcie, the then Bishop of St. Albans in May of 1977. The School converted to Academy status on the 1st April, 2012.

The School stands in the parkland which was once part of Henlow Grange and accommodates pupils aged 9 to 13. It includes a Library, Science Laboratories, Music Room, ICT Room, Hall, Gymnasium, Design Centre and twenty-one classrooms.

The initiative of Henlow Academy and its organization of events reviving ancient Greek history, is not only notable, it  is a reminder that there is an absence in our schools of activities for the young generation, allowing students to engage themselves with their historical past. Ancient Greeks are to this day of global importance, laying the foundation of western society.

The ancient Greek education focused on training the mind, body, and spirit.  They also invented democracy and teachings of how one can effectively be an active citizen in politics, serving the democratic regime well. If we had adopted activities like Living History day, similar to that of Henlow Academy, and followed the ancient Greek  ideology, perhaps we could have avoided the current economic crisis.
