Corinne Mentzelopoulos Leads the Wine Industry in France

MetzelopoulosLife may not have been “a walk in the park” for this successful lady, however her choices led her to be one of the leading women of the wine industry in France and worldwide.

Corinne Mentzelopoulos-Petit, daughter of the successful Greek businessman André Mentzelopoulos, is the Greek-French businesswoman who owns and runs the prestigious Bordeaux wine estate, Château Margaux.

André Mentzelopoulos, head of the French grocery and finance group Félix Potin, bought Château Margaux in 1976. At first, French seemed not to like the fact that one of the five most expensive and historic business of Bordeaux Wine was in the hands of a foreigner. However, Mentzelopoulos did a great job; by the time of his death in 1980, Château Margaux was considered substantially restored to its former reputation, with the 1978 and 1979 vintages declared “exceptional”.

When Metzelopoulos died, his widow Laura and daughter Corinne inherited the estate and proceeded to make substantial improvements to the winery. “At first we continued my father’s work out of pride. We simply didn’t have the right to let it fail.” Corinne says.

Through hard work and smart choices, Château Margaux is now on the list of the world’s most expensive wines, while the price of a Château Margaux bottle can reach hundreds of thousands of euros depending on age.

Corinne Mentzelopoulos does not forget her Greek roots and visits Achaia, in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula, Greece, and the Greek islands while keeping her Greek passport.  She’s also not afraid to admit that she loves Retsina.

All her three daughters have kept the name Mentzelopoulos and their Greek citizenship. In addition, Corinne recently established a scholarship at the University of Patras.
