Turkey Attaches Conditions for Halki Seminary

xalki1The Turkish government appears to attach conditions for the reopening of the Halki seminary, (formally the Theological School of Halki).

Vice-Prime Minister of Turkey Bülent Arınç stated that for the reopening of the School, “A number of conditions have to be satisfied domestically  and abroad. When these are fulfilled, we can talk about reopening the Theological School. The minorities ask for the reopening of the School that closed 40 years ago. The aim of the School is the education of priests. They are right. We satisfy the needs of the clergy with special permission we give as a government.”

Arınç’s statements portray one of the demands of the Turkish government which is asking from Greece something in exchange, for example a mosque in Athens or the opening of a Muslim Theological School in Western Thrace.
