French Say Mykonos Untouched By Crisis

par1“Away from the austerity, the feast goes on in Mykonos,” writes the French magazine Paris Match about the famous Island of the Winds that is expected to draw more than a million visitors during Greece’s record-breaking tourist year.

According to the columnist of the magazine, people there have fun without worrying about harsh reality, perhaps because they can afford it.

The magazine highlights that the beginning in the Greek island was marked with the arrival of Aristotle Onassis in the 1950’s, along with the international jet set that accompanied and danced Syrtaki with him and since then somehow Mykonos became one of the top tourist destinations Europe.

“Mysterious, romantic, is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe after St. Tropez and Ibiza,” notes the article. About three hours away from Paris, Mykonos is a magnetic field and anyone who visits it, according to Paris Match, feels this unique energy.

And of course the magazine refers to the famous visitors over the decades, who have also enjoyed their vacation on the island, such as Bill Clinton, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino, Armani, Steven Spielberg, Russell Crowe, Madonna, Johnny Depp, Naomi Campbell, while adding that the first gay bar in Europe was opened in Mykonos by Italian Piero Aversa, the famous Piero’s Bar, which is still a big draw for gays.

However, this summer something seems to have changed in Mykonos and that was the nationality of the tourists of the island as, according to French Paris Match, Afghans, Russians, Pakistanis, Turks, Israelis, Lebanese, Brazilians visited this year, among others, the island.
