Greece to Make Special Zones for Rowdy Tourists

31b3adbb7d5814aac8a56746cc2551f7_LThe Guardian has a revealing reportage about the intentions of  the Greek authorities concerning rowdy tourists.

The murder of a British tourist in Crete has pushed the Greek authorities to consider creating special zones for rowdy holidaymakers visiting the island. The new idea will be discussed at a conference of the mayors of Zakynthos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Kos in Athens. The discussion will involve agencies of the Ministry of Tourism and representatives of the British Embassy.

Since we are facing such problems, we will meet in October to discuss additional measures to address these issues, the mayor Zacharias Doxastakis said, and continued, “In our case we consider creating  for young tourists special areas outside the city.”

Government officials after the murder of Matthew Burns described the meeting of mayors as imperative because such incidents create a bad name for Greek tourism and should be avoided at all costs, as the official of the Ministry of Tourism said.

The idea of creating a special zone for tourists will shift the problem out of town. According to the new urban law, the idea of creating clubs, discos, bars and special racing tracks in a special, restricted area outside the city is being considered.

Greece cannot continue to be a playground for anyone who wants to satisfy his desires, Doxastakis told the Guardian and continued, “During the day these children are adorable, but at night they get drunk and become different people. In these areas they can do whatever they want. Locals demand the municipal authorities take action.”
