Greek Singer Mocks Schaeuble

15736120_130723ab.limghandler“Greek Singer Mocks Schaeuble.” That was the headline of a story in the German newspaper Bild which said it referred to a party in Mykonos where a singer named Antonis Remos made fun of the wheelchair-bound German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

The story said the 41-year-old singer did not choose to limit his repertoire to his songs, but mocked the minister, saying that “If Schaeuble could give a look right now at all those bottles of champagne, then he would be able to walk again.”

It was said the audience laughed hilariously, making fun of a man in a wheelchair who was not there to defend himself. Greeks are angry at him as the architect of austerity measures insisted upon by Germany in return for backing big bailouts for Greeks, many of whom Germans believe spend their time partying instead of working.

Schaeuble, who has been wheelchair-bound since an assassination attempt by a mentally ill man in 1990 who shot him, injuring his spine and face. The man was released in 2004. Despite his handicap, Schaeuble has been regarded as one of the brightest financial minds in Europe.

The newspaper said that Remos continued his concert by firing profanities about German Chancellor Angela Merkel as well and showed his contempt for Germans. Schaeuble had been in Athens last week to boost Prime Minister Antonis Samaras for imposing more austerity measures. President Karolos Papoulias used the visit to talk as well about war debts he said Germany still owes Greece.

The article concludes with a description of the economic situation of the country, which “becomes more and more dramatic.” It is highlighted that although the deficit has been reduced within the first half of 2013 to 5 billion euros from 12.5 billion, there are still large gaps and delays over the revenues from taxes and the VAT.
