FYROM’s Ministry of Interior Affairs, mentioned that lately the number of immigrants who entered illegally the country through Greece, in order to reach the countries of Central and Western Europe, has significantly increased.
“Unfortunately the cooperation with Greece is not at the desired level, it is not even at the level that our cooperation with all other neighboring countries is.”
FYROM’s Minister of Interior Affairs, Gordana Jankuloska, mentioned that the cooperation between the FYROM authorities and the Greek authorities to address the influx of illegal immigrants is not sufficient.
“It is necessary to cooperate with the countries through which the illegal immigrants pass before they reach our country. We need not only to communicate and to exchange information, but to have a joint action of the police forces in the area. Unfortunately, the cooperation with Greece in this matter, as in all other matters, is not at the desired level, it is not even at the level that our cooperation with all other neighboring countries is. This causes additional difficulties, because if the border line isn’t securely controlled equally by both sides, we have a great problem which reduces the effectiveness of our efforts,” Jankuloska stated, adding: “The entry of illegal immigrants in our country has increased from the beginning of the economic crisis in Greece”.
Police spokesman Ivo Kotevski mentioned that FYROM’s Ministry of Interior affairs has called on Greek authorities to increase the efforts to halt the wave of immigrants who enter FYROM through Greece.
“Our country is under increased pressure, as this year the number of the detected illegal immigrants has increased fivefold. The rapid escalation of entries of illegal immigrants in our country occurs from the beginning of the economic crisis in Greece. The Ministry of Interior Affairs takes all the necessary measures in order to halt the influx of illegal immigrants in the country, however it is extremely difficult to tightly secure the borders. The southern neighbor should intensify the controls in his own side of the borders,” Kotevski added.
