Elafonisi Among BBC’s Top Secret Beaches

FFF_531_355A Greek beach has been singled out by the BBC among the five best “secret” beaches of Europe.

This is the Elafonisi Βeach in Crete, which is an exotic place of rare natural beauty and of great ecological importance. “Wade through the translucent shallows to reach the tiny islet facing Elafonisi Beach, a nature reserve on the southeastern tip of Crete,” is noted in the publication. It stresses it is unusually quiet and commerce-free, with pinkish sand and bright blue waters and gives information on how to get there.

The other four well hidden secrets of Europe are: The Isle of Harris beach in Hebrides Islands in Scotland, which has white sand and crystal-clear azure waters, while it seems made to satisfy the needs of surfers.

The Côte Sauvage, located on the East coast of France, is surrounded by a shaggy pine and green oak forest with white sand and is accessible only after a serious hike over the dunes.

Sardinia’s Bidderosa Beach is another place protected for its great ecological value. It is close to the Italian village of Orosei and shares the same pale white sands and transparent azure waters of the region.

The beach Cala Varques in Majorca, accessible only by boat or a rocky footpath. Its waters look like swimming pool water and is surrounded by a beautiful pine forest. The publication suggests visitors pack their lunch and water, as there’s no tourist facility on the beach.
