Greece Medals in Mediterranean Games

olumpiakoi-agones-ogdoi-imeraDavid Kavelasvili won two gold medals in Weightlifting representing Greece on June 26, participating in the 17th Mediterranean Games 2013 that take place in Mersin, located in the Mediterranean Region of Southern Turkey.

In the category of 105 kilograms, Kavelasvili won both in Snatch and Clean & Jerk, lifting 173 kg in the first category and 215 in the second, obtaining the two gold medals for Greece, at the sixth day of the Games.

Agi Kasoumi won the silver medal in Shooting on June 26. On June 25, Greece’s national water polo team won the bronze medal, Xenidis Timofei and Theocharis Kalanidis won a bronze medal each in Wrestling (Free Style) in different categories, while 12 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) were collected by the Greek team in Swimming.

On June 24, Thodoris Iakovidis won the bronze medal in Weightlifting, both in Snatch and Clean & Jerk, while two gold and one silver medals were won by the Greek athletes Lefteris Kosmidis, Lefteris Petrounias and Vaso Miliousi in Gymnastics.

On June 23, Vasiliki Lymberopoulou won the bronze medal in Judo, while two gold medals were won by Katerina Nikolaidou and Lefteris Konsolas with Spyros Giannaros in Rowing.

On the occasion of the Mediterranean Games, the largest multidisciplinary sporting event after the Olympics, athletes of the countries in Mediterranean Basin meet every four years.

These Regional Games gather the young people from three continents (Europe, Africa, and Asia), with the same spirit despite their different origins, religion, language and culture, in one place together with the Olympic ideal, as reported in the Mediterranean Games’ official website.

The first edition of the Games was held in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, while in 1991 they were held in Athens.
