French Press’s Bleak Headlines for ERT

liberation1_486_355After the Greek public broadcaster ERT’s shutdown, there has been an unprecedented wave of foreign media solidarity with ERT employees and Greece in general.

Following the Franco-German ARTE, which dubbed its TV news program in Greek showing great interest in ERT’s shutdown, and Belgian Tele Bruxelles, which replaced its logo with that of ERT’s and the word solidarity, now comes the French media’s turn to stand by the Greek state broadcaster and condemn the Greek government’s decision.

Libération and Humanité newspapers in their June 13 issues, chose some rather demonstrative headlines. The first one, against a black background, poses the question: “Who turned off the TV in Greece? (Qui a éteint la télé?)” and the second one, against the same background, goes: “Black screen on democracy (Écran noir sur la démocratie)” while speaking of a “coup against the Greek public TV broadcaster.”
At the same moment, a 24-hour strike of the Greek media has spread throughout Greece in protest of  the government’s decision to shut down ERT.

ERT employees refuse to leave the ERT headquarters and continue to broadcast both on TV and on the radio. The broadcasts are being transmitted through the EBU official website.
