Protests Against Papandreou in Edinburgh

645B904EFA376C09A0C2267B6DF2A96BProtesters gathered outside the convention center where the TEDGlobal conference is being held in Edinburgh and attempted to block George Papandreou’s speech.

For a long time, there were reactions to the former Greek prime minister’s speech. There was even an online poll to gather signatures and to denounce him. Protesters chanted slogans against Papandreou and for some time the situation was strained.

“Papandreou we are coming. You are the successor of Thatcher, bastard, ” one of the banners said.

Eventually, the former Greek prime minister was able to speak at the conference in the first session entitled, Moments of Truth. His speech was about failure in leadership.

“When the riot police protect Parliaments, then there is something deeply wrong with our democracies. We have global markets, but we have not globalized our democratic institutions. After decades in politics, I’m a pragmatist. I know that things have to change, ” Papandreou said.
