Big Greek Migration Wave to Germany in 2012

greenmigrant.jpgeditedGermany received the biggest immigration wave in 2012, as 1,080,936 migrants, of whom 34,000 Greeks, moved to Germany in 2012, according to the newspaper Tasspiegel.

According to German government statistics, about 34,000 Greeks relocated to Germany in 2012. This is an increase of 43 percent compared to the corresponding number in 2011, while the first year of the Greek crisis, 12,550 Greeks moved to Germany.

A generalized migratory wave to Germany is noted, as 29,000 migrants from Spain and 42,000 from Italy moved there in 2012, according to statistics. About 176,000 Poles, 116,000 Romanians and 59,000 Bulgarians migrated to Germany in 2012 as well.

Greek doctors, engineers, programmers, nurses and educators are the main professionals to leave Greece in order to cover several vacant positions. An increase of 10 percent has been noted since 2010 in Greeks learning German, while an increase of 15 percent has been noted in students choosing German as a second foreign language.

In total, more than a million new immigrants arrived in Germany in 2012, the largest influx since 1995. The average age of the migrants is 32, as reported in Kathimerini newspaper.
