Russian Media Depict Youthless Greece

newego_LARGE_t_1101_54151301_type12128The Russian RT news agency, noting that many young Greeks are fleeing their country because of a crushing economic crisis and austerity measures that have put 64 percent of them out of work, said the country is facing a lost generation.

Seeing no hope or future, some 70 percent of young Greeks said they’d like to move elsewhere to find work and a better life.

In their effort to find a job, young people affected by the economic crisis now seem to be open to the options of migrating to a foreign country or taking up a rural job, that in any case they will offer them further career prospects.

The numbers are staggering: 150,000 Greeks left the country in search of work within the past five years. The consequences of the economic crisis especially over this age group are obvious, with analysts citing the effect that will follow if Greece loses its young.

An economics professor at the University of Macedonia told RT: “The fact that countries such as Greece lose the young generation, especially young people with academic education, is a real tragedy.” Many young have protested, to no avail.

“I’m lucky because I come from a farming family,” said one student in Thessaloniki. “We have no future here, but at least we have our land and we can survive. People in cities have no future. “
