More Greeks Want Work In Austria

anergia_527_355The number of Greeks seeking a job in Austria was up by 15 percent in 2012, compared to 2011, according to data published by Statistics Austria, although the total was still only a miniscule 156. Greece’s crushing economic crisis is making many flee.

At the same level of 15 percent was also the rise in the number of Spanish and Portuguese who came to work in Austria during 2012. Hungarians broke the record, as 30,000 people immigrated last year to Austria not only because of the difficult economic condition in Hungary, but also because of the political polarization.

According to Statistics Austria, in 2012, some 400,000 people from EU countries and Switzerland were living in Austria, 8.5 percent more than 2011 and with 153,000 of them being German.

According to the Statistics Austria report in October 2012, the number of Greeks who went to work in Austrian in the period July 2011-July 2012 increased by 37 percent, more than twice as the corresponding percentage for 2012. Germans are in the first place in EU concerning immigration to Austria as they surpass 4,500, followed by Romanians (2,000) and Polish (1,900).
